Nana

Yup! Heroes come in all shapes and sizes.
My grandmother, Dolores, is 103 this year.
Born 1917.
Currently under quarantine in a nursing home in New York.
Tested positive for COVID-19, asymptomatic, (two weeks and counting) and still kicking ass and taking names playing scrabble.

For a small amount of perspective at this moment, imagine you were born in 1917.
* World War I July 28, 1914 – November 11, 1918
When you were born, World War I was raging and ends on you were 1years old with 22 million people killed.
* The Spanish Flu January 1918 – December 1920
The Spanish Flu epidemic hits the planet and runs from January 1918 – December 1920. Fifty million people die from it in those two years. Yes, 50 million.
* Great Depression August 1929 – March 1933
When you're 12, the Great Depression begins. Unemployment hits 25%, global GDP drops 27%. That runs until you are 16 years old. The country nearly collapses along with the world economy.
* World War II Sep 1, 1939 – Sep 2, 1945
When you turn 22, World War II starts. You aren’t even over the hill yet. When you're 24, the United States is fully pulled into WWII.
You are married to a military man and stationed in Panama, give birth to your first born. When Pearl Harbor was attacked the United States was expecting to be attacked in Panama. You are living in blackouts, alone with your toddler, given a gun and told to protect yourself and your son while your husband & the base is on high alert.
Between your 22nd and 28th birthday, 75 million people perish in the war and the Holocaust kills six million.
* Korean War June 25, 1950 – July 27, 1953
At 33 years old, the Korean War starts, and five million perish.
Cuban Missile Crisis October 16, 1962 – October 28, 1962
Your are 45 years old when the Cuban Missile Crisis occurs, a tipping point in the Cold War. Life on our planet, as we know it, could well have ended. Great leaders prevented that from happening.
* Vietnam War November 1, 1955 – April 30, 1975
At 38 the Vietnam War begins, and it doesn’t end for many years. Four million people die in that conflict. As you approach 58, the Vietnam War finally ends.
* Widowed July 8, 1967 You still have three of your 7 children living at home. You have 2 sons and 1 son-in-law in the military actively serving. You are supporting yourself and your family and never whisper a complaint. Ever. You are the epitome of strength, guts and determination. A Heroes Hero. You are my Hero. ❤️

Think of everyone on the planet born in the early 1900’s. How do you survive all of that? A kid in 1987 didn’t think their 70 year-old grandmother understood how hard school was. Yet those grandparents (and now great grandparents) survived through everything listed above.
Perspective is an amazing art. Let’s try and keep things in perspective. Let’s be smart, help each other out, and we will get through all of this. In the history of the world, there has never been a storm that lasted. This too shall pass.
